Florida’s HB 1467 exposes the controversy regarding book banning and censorship in new ways. Signed into law in March of 2022, it became a live law later last year in July. Teachers are now closing their classroom book libraries out of fear that they could be charged with a felony. The law’s text is clear; there should be no pornographic content allowed in the classrooms. This is something I did not believe anyone would argue against.
Then I received a text about a previous episode from Lefty Lehman. He believes children should have access to all books and all content. We are vehemently at odds on this issue. I wanted to hear why the left was so against protecting youth from pornographic content. What I discovered was a conversation that was about traditional family values versus progressive views.
This conversation today could happen in any part of America. It is another reason we are divided. We check our bias and the way we were raised today, and discuss the psychological well-being of youth and content. Does HB 1467 go too far? Or should this be adopted nationally?
