A republic can only exist as long as the people trust their elections. Yet our trust in our electoral systems seems to be declining. This cannot be good for the republic.
Some people blame this growing distrust in the American election system on misinformation or people using social media to exaggerate its issues. Others point to those problems as evidence that things need to be fixed. So what is the best way to deal with this decline in trust in our elections? Is it to downplay the problems in an effort to retain public trust, or is it to expose them?
It’s important to know what the problems are. After all, if the electoral system is not functioning in a trustworthy manner, then it shouldn’t be trusted. But it’s not enough to point out the problems or even to offer solutions. If trust in our election system is to be restored, We the People, must not only provide solutions but enact them.
