Though its origin is uncertain, nearly everyone has heard the words; you can’t legislate morality. Some attribute the quote to R.M. MacIver, a Scottish sociologist, and educator, but who knows? Is this a true statement? The answer may depend on your definition of the word and your semantics skills. If morality is defined as the practice of moral duties based on an accepted standard of right, then morality certainly can be legislated. That’s why we have police officers and a penal code. While some people may be churlish brutes, they may practice morality for fear of the consequences of choosing not to do so. Thus, a  neighbor who might gladly steal from you at an opportune time would likely not set your house on fire, considering imprisonment for arson too costly a price. Whatever the motive or disincentive, the outcome is the same. Morality imposed works. Is this not the sole purpose of the law and government?

While legislation cannot change the heart, some form of legislation is necessary to regulate bad behaviors that an evil heart chooses not to constrain. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once asserted, “It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me.” In other words, if someone were pointing a gun to your head right now, you’d likely be praying that someone quickly legislates some morality on your behalf.

Those of you who argue that morality is an internally motivated choice of the heart may disagree with this conclusion. Certainly, the business of the heart belongs to religion, and education nurtures the formulations of thought in the brain. Both are essential to character development. But even morality is subject to the flaws of human weakness, and who but God can judge the hearts of men? Remember, a moral code is only as good as the source of its standard.

In the wake of the current medical cancel culture, liberal governments seem to have a new standard, one unknown to a free republic. They believe that they can legislate not only their own brand of morality but also anything else they deem to be expedient for their agenda. Theirs is a foreign code to Americans. Of course, they will appeal to the universal principles of “good” by their own standard, as they themselves might call their legislation conducive to social welfare. But from whence come their motives? What exactly is their standard?

We are now fast approaching the end of the 100-day mask mandate imposed by President Biden’s puppeteers, but how many states and cities will define their own standard of what is good for society?

As I write, Governor Kate Brown has already imposed further “emergency” executive orders to keep Oregonians locked down and masked. This is another form of legislating morality—a corrupt imposition and overreaching of leaders for ill-sought gain. Dare I make such a bold claim against the leaders of our state? Yes, I do. If the state’s standard does not fit the norms of my free country as set forth by our Constitution, and if the rogue standards do not align with my conscience that is based on a God-given standard, then I am obligated to defy the state. Call it what you want: civil disobedience, defiance, patriotism, citizenship. Every person living under a set of rules is obligated to live by those rules—to be legislated by morality—unless the rules change. Unless the rules defy a worthy standard.

The standard is the sum of best medical evidence (characteristically found in randomized controlled trials) to verify a health claim in medicine. When those who hold to the right standard say that masks don’t work, they mean masks have been demonstrated by the gold standard of medicine to have no medically protective value or worse. To believe otherwise is to be misled, deceived, defrauded. This is exactly what has happened to us.

When government sources that we rely upon for accurate medical information, such as the CDC, NIH, and WHO claim that experimental vaccines are safe and effective, we know they have forsaken the gold standard. These organizations have become frauds.

And they do have an agenda! Our responsibility as American citizens is to hold them accountable and to call out their inappropriate legislation of morality. Yes, they are legislating. Do you not feel guilty if you don’t wear a mask in public? Are you reticent to disclose the fact that you have no intention of taking an experimental vaccine? Enough said.

In American life, the standard on which our country was founded is the Bible—the inspired word of God. 

Therefore, perhaps it’s time to legislate morality based on the proper standard. Take off the mask. Do not lockdown. Learn about the vaccine, and make a wise decision, as it is an experimental unknown. Learn about the swine flu vaccine; history is a great teacher. Ignorance is never bliss. Ignorance can be lethal. And freedom is always at stake. We still have a choice. Please choose wisely. Or suffer the consequences.
